Do you have old t-shirts and sweaters taking up space in your closet? Why not reuse them by turning them into yarn? The process is quite simple and takes little time. For sweaters, locate the knot at the bottom of the garment to get started. Either untie or cut the knot that is holding the sweater together. Then, just pull! Your sweater should come unraveled in no time. As you get more yarn, start rolling it into a ball to keep it neat and untangled. For t-shirts, the process is a little more involved, but not much. You will need scissors or a fabric cutting wheel. Start at the bottom of the t-shirt and start cutting the fabric into a half-inch strip. Cut around the t-shirt in order to keep one long piece of “yarn”. As with the sweater yarn, roll the fabric into a ball to keep it neat. You are now ready to create items out of your recycled fabric. T-shirts can be knitted, crocheted or braided into dish towels and rugs. Sweaters can be turned into scarves and pillows by crocheting or knitting them as well. Recycling shirts and sweaters is a fun way to clean out your closet and save the planet at the same time!
